Getting a Good Seat

Ever get stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane? What can you do to try and avoid that situation? A couple of things I do help. First make sure you join the airlines frequent flier program. The airlines will recognize their loyal customers and automatically give you a better seat.

Make sure you book your tickets early. The earlier you book the better availability of seating. You can also pay for more legroom on some airlines.

I usually ask for an aisle seat. It gives me a little more shoulder room.

Make sure, if you possibly can, to print out your boarding pass at home, or at least check your reservations online. Try to do it 24 hours before your scheduled departure. At that time the airline will release many of their premium seats and exit row seats. They are yours for the taking.

Chances are pretty good if you follow these steps you'll get a decent seat.

Carry-On Luggage to be Sized Up

Well you knew once the airlines started to charge for luggage they would want to make the most money possible. Over the last few days we have heard about some of the airlines closely checking the size of your carry-on. If it is over sized, you'll be paying at least $15 to check it, sorry. Of course they are blaming the TSA. This ought to get real interesting. They'll have people everywhere measuring carry-on bags and carrying credit card readers.

Here is the carry-on size limits for one major airline: Up to 51 in/129 cm (11 x 14 x 26 in or 28 x 35 x 66 cm). More than those dimensions and you'll be paying.

Oh, don't forget your checked bags. A 3rd bag may set you back another $100. Also they'll be measuring. If it is larger than:
62 in/157 cm, you'll have to dig into your pocket for a C-Note.

Be sure to build these costs into your vacation or business budget (or travel light). Check with your airline for the latest rules (and costs) for your baggage.

New Airline Regulations and Surcharges

So much has changed in the way we travel in recent years. Since 2001 and the events of 9/11 we saw many security features improved, including screening, and what is considered to be acceptable to bring with you on vacation. Now, on top of all of the security changes, we are witnessing yet another change, and that is in the airline fares. If you are a frequent flyer, you have probably already noticed the significant increase in prices for tickets. This is due to the overwhelming current price of fuel. For airlines to survive, they simply had to increase their fares to account for the increase in fuel prices. The way they are doing this is by charging every flyer a surcharge for fuel. This is not new; however, what has changed is yet another increase to the fuel surcharge. For example, the major airline in the US has charged an additional twenty dollars on a roundtrip, on top of what you were paying before. You will witness many other airlines following suit. Unfortunately, this will not change anytime soon. As long as the price of fuel stays high, we will see the fuel surcharges increasing along with gas prices.

Airlines Cutting Service and Employees

Well the major airlines are making drastic measures. United started with cutbacks to its fleet and personnel, and yesterday it was Continental. They announced taking 67 inefficient airplanes out of service with layoffs for 3000 employees. Continental said they will be paying over $2 billion more for fuel this year if they don't cut back capacity. I think you will be seeing more airline announcements in the days and weeks ahead.

We as travellers are seeing ticket prices double or even trip along some routes. This is not likely to improve over the next few months. Whenever you have plans to fly you should go ahead and lock in your airfare as soon as your dates are firm. Waiting until the last minute will be a pricey mistake.
